Diego Velázquez was a Spanish painter, leading artist at the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age. An individualist of the Baroque period, he is known for his portraits and historical and cultural scenes.

Alongside numerous historical and cultural compositions, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and commoners, culminating in "Las Meninas", widely regarded as one of the most analyzed paintings in Western art.
