Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose bold colors and dramatic brushwork helped lay the foundations of modern art. He produced around 2,100 works in a career of just over a decade, including some 860 oil paintings, most from his final two years.

Van Gogh struggled with mental illness, lived in poverty for much of his career, and achieved little commercial success in his lifetime. He died in 1890, and his reputation grew posthumously, helped by the tireless advocacy of his sister-in-law Johanna van Gogh-Bonger.
